How to Use macOS Night Shift

Looking at the bright light emitted from monitors or device screens late into the night can have a significant impact on the user's circadian rhythm, the internal sleep-wake cycle that repeats approximately every 24 hours. To lessen the impact many users have resorted to applications that automatically shift the screen's light from blue-ish and bright during the day to much more yellowish and dimmer during night-hours. Apple's macOS comes with a built-in feature called Night Shift for exactly that purpose, eliminating the need for finding and installing third-party applications. Night Shift uses the system's clock as well as its geolocation to determine whether it's currently night or day and adjusts the color temperature of the screen accordingly.

To start Night Shift, go to the Apple menu and then select 'System Preferences.' Go to the 'Displays' pane. Click on the Night Shift tab. In the 'Schedule' menu, choose 'Sunset to Sunrise' to enable Night Shift to automatically active/deactivate itself whenever it detects that night-time has started. From the same menu, users can create their personal schedules for Night Shift. Just click on 'Custom' and type the required information into the boxes such as start and finish time.
