'Account Version is Outdated' Email Scam

Users are being targeted by another phishing scam that wants to steal their email login credentials. Tracked as 'Account Version is Outdated' email scam, this phishing operation begins with the dissemination of deceptive and misleading lure emails.

Users will receive a message that their email account is now outdated. To pressure the victim into following the instructions of the scammers, the emails threaten that if the email is not updated, the user's account will be permanently terminated. Of course, this is all false is just a ruse to get the victim to click the provided 'Upgrade Now' link.

The hyperlink leads to a dedicated phishing page controlled by the scammers. The website is designed to appear as a regular login page. It asks users to sign in by providing their account credentials (email and password). Unbeknownst to the users, however, the site will scrape all entered information and make it available to its operators.

The scammers can then abuse the received data in a myriad of different ways. They may try to escalate their reach and take control over other accounts of the user. Afterward, they can start spreading malware threats, phishing messages, or other scam emails while posing as their victim. The scammers may also attempt to simply sell the acquired credentials to cybercriminals on the dark web.
