Threat Database Browser Hijackers Safari Redirect Virus

Safari Redirect Virus

Safari Redirect Virus is a generic name given to browser hijacker applications that affected the Safari web browser. Such apps usually installed themselves onto the computer system without attracting the attention of the user by employing manipulative and deceptive tactics. That is why the infosec community also designates such apps as PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

The two most widely used methods are bundling and fake installers/updates. Bundling sees that installation of PUP being hidden as a pre-selected option that is part of the installation of another more popular freeware app. The fake installers and updates assume the identity of popular programs such as Adobe Flash Player and urge users to install them.

The first sign that something is out of the ordinary for many users is when they open their Safari browser but instead of the familiar homepage, they are taken to a completely unfamiliar address. This is a result of the main functionality of all Safari Redirect virus apps. They are created with the sole purpose of taking control over specific browser settings in order to promote a sponsored address. In nearly all cases, the address is of a fake search engine that cannot produce search results on its own. Instead, the search queries of the users will be redirected to a legitimate engine but with various sponsored ads injected into the final list of results.

Users are strongly advised to remove all browser hijackers apps as soon as possible due to the data-harvesting capabilities that they might have. It is quite common for browser hijackers to spy on the browsing habits of the user. They might collect information, including browsing history, search history, IP addresses, geolocation, etc.

How To Avoid Safari Redirect Virus

To avoid Safari Redirect Virus, you have to be aware of different types of threats that might be ready to enter your system. Also, whenever you are looking for information about these threats, be aware that there might be several different keywords used to refer to the same issue. For instance, the Safari Redirects to Yahoo Virus may also be part of the Safari Redirect Virus. How does this work?

As mentioned above, Safari Redirect Virus is a general (or an umbrella) term for various browser hijacker applications that affect the Safari browser. Most of the time, they redirect users to unfamiliar websites or change their homepages. More often than not, those apps use well-known search engines to make themselves look reliable.

How Search Engines Leveraged by Redirect Viruses

Yahoo is one of those search engines that are commonly used by potentially unwanted programs. It does not mean that Yahoo has anything to do with Safari Redirect Virus. However, the people behind those unfamiliar and potentially harmful programs may embed the link to Yahoo Search in their programs. As a result, if you happen to add one of those apps to your computer, some of your search queries will be redirected to a modified version of Yahoo Search, and it will look like Safari redirects you to Yahoo.

Luckily, it is getting harder for potentially unwanted programs and browser hijackers to exploit various vulnerabilities so they could reach you. For example, if it was possible to trick users into downloading fake Adobe Flash Player update packages before, now it becomes more challenging to find such openings. Adobe Flash Player was discontinued, and Adobe no longer supports Flash Player components. By now, you must have gotten a notification on your browser that you need to uninstall the app.

Of course, there are many other ways for Safari Redirect Virus to reach you. There are also multiple browser hijackers who can fall under this Safari Redirect Virus term. Some of the intruders that we have already discussed include apps like SearchMineSearch Pulse, and Safe Finder. All of these apps tend to reach their targets either through freeware downloads or through random pop-ups. Hence, users should be able to avoid Safari Redirect Virus if they steered clear of unfamiliar websites and pages that distribute third-party software.
