Threat Database Ransomware Lloo Ransomware

Lloo Ransomware

Cybersecurity researchers have identified another ransomware variant belonging to the prolific STOP/Djvu family. The threat is tracked as the Lloo Ransomware and has retained the destructive capabilities of the STOP/Djvu Ransomware family. Breached devices infected with Lloo will be subjected to data encryption that will leave nearly all of the data stored there in an unusable state. Documents, PDFs, archives, databases, images, audio and video files, etc. could all be locked with an uncrackable encryption algorithm. The affected users will then be extorted for money if they want to receive the required decryption keys from the attackers.

When the threat locks a file, it also modified that file's original name. More specifically, it will append '.lloo' to it as a new extension. Another change to the infected system will be the creation of a text file named '_readme.txt.' The file will contain a ransom note detailing the demands of Lloo Ransomware's operators.

Ransom Note's Overview

Reading the ransom-demanding message reveals that the hackers are willing to assist their victims with the restoration of the locked data. However, before sending the necessary decryption key and a specific software tool, the cybercriminals demand to be paid a ransom of exactly $980. They also offer to reduce that price in half if their victims contact them within 72 hours of the attack. Two email addresses - 'restorealldata@firemail.cc' and 'gorentos@bitmessage.ch,' and a Telegram account at '@datarestore' are mentioned in the note, as potential communication channels. The hackers also express their willingness to decrypt one file for free.

Of course, users should never trust the words of malware operators. Furthermore, communication with cybercriminals could expose them to additional privacy or security risks.
