Threat Database Adware GeneralSearchBoard

GeneralSearchBoard

GeneralSearchBoard is yet another PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) that tries to install itself onto users' Mac devices sneakily To achieve its goal the application might be bundled alongside a more desirable software product or injected into fake installers/updates. No matter how GeneralSearchBoard managed to get inside the Mac, its presence there will be felt almost immediately.

PUPs are known for carrying out multiple intrusive activities. They may be programmed to run an ad campaign that will deliver advertising materials of all kinds to the device - pop-ups, banners, in-text links and more. The advertisements could impact the browsing experience drastically by starting to overlay any legitimately viewed content.

In addition, users may notice that their Web browsers have begun behaving strangely. Instead of the usual homepage, new page tab, and the default search engine, now an unfamiliar new address is being opened. This browser hijacker functionality of the PUP is often used to promote dubious or fake search engines that would otherwise see no traffic.

And if that wasn't enough to convince you that you should keep any PUP on your Mac, these applications also are infamous for having data-harvesting capabilities. While present on the system, the PUP could access the entire browsing history, search history and all clicked links. The obtained data will then be uploaded to a remote server.
