GeneralCache

GeneralCache is a Mac application designed to promote the Safe Finder website through akamaihd.net by changing the browser's default settings and displaying intrusive advertisements on every website you visit. GeneralCache is an adware application with browser hijacking characteristics. Unsafe programs such as GeneralCache are often downloaded and installed by users unknowingly, which is why they also are categorized as Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs).

GeneralCache belongs to the Adload malware family, just like other Mac adware/browser hijackers such as InterfaceSample, SearchTopic, ElementaryDataSearch and ProduceStyle. The applications from this family bombard users with intrusive advertisements in the form of banners, coupons, surveys, and pop-ups, that not only slow the performance of the system and limit visibility but also can lead to further infections if clicked on.
Additionally, GeneralCache's browser hijacking capabilities allow it to promote fake search engines by changing the user's default browser search engine, homepage and new tab URLs. Because the phony search engine can't show any legitimate search results, it just redirects to Google, Bing or Yahoo. This redirect is meant to gather information about the user's browsing habits, such a search queries, visited pages, IP addresses and geolocations mainly

Furthermore, GeneralCache also can read credit card details, passwords, and other information. Any information gathered by the GeneralCache PUP/adware/browser hijacker can then be sold to third parties, often ending up in the hands of cybercriminals. This can lead to various problems, including financial losses, compromised online privacy and even identity theft. It is always advisable to delete applications like GeneralCache and other members of its family as soon as you're aware of their presence on your computer.
