SearchTopic

SearchTopic is a browser extension that carries the characteristics of adware and browser hijackers. SearchTopic also is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP)  due to the fact that some users may be tricked into installing it on their Mac systems.

Applications similar to SearchTopic often are designed to display numerous coupons, pop-up windows, and various advertisement types that,when clicked, lead the unsuspecting user to various promoted sites. Visiting such websites represents a significant security risk, as they, intentionally or not, may have malware injected into them.

After being installed, however, SearchTopic does a lot more than just generate advertisements. This browser extension modifies some of the default settings of the user's Web browser. The default search engine will be changed to SearchTopic. As a result, when a search query is carried out, it gets redirected through the SearchTopic search, which, in turn, runs it through and displays results from search.yahoo.com.

To restore their preferred search engine, users may have to remove SearchTopic from their Macs completely.
