'YOUR MAILBOX IS OUTDATED' Email Scam

The con artists are using another phishing scheme to try and trick users into divulging private and confidential information, such as account credentials. This particular phishing campaign involves the dissemination of lure emails claiming to be coming from the user's email service provider. The subject line of the misleading emails could be similar to 'Mailbox Version Outdated - To Fix Errors - Update Version.'

The emails state that the current email version is outdated as a result users can no longer receive emails. To reinforce this false claim, the emails say that users have numerous pending emails that the server cannot retrieve. To fix the supposed issue, users are directed towards pressing the included 'Request New Version' button.

Clicking the button opens a fake Webmail website. At this point, users are asked to provide their email account passwords. All information entered into this phishing portal will become available to the fraudsters. With the compromised credentials, the unscrupulous people could take over the email account and any other accounts that use it as a security backup. They also could package all the collected information and offer it for sale to any interested third parties, including cybercriminal organizations.
