Threat Database Adware UpgradeIdeas

UpgradeIdeas

UpgradeIdeas describes itself as a convenient addition that could help users receive more accurate search results in less time. Unfortunately, the true functionality of the application is that of adware designed to monetize its presence by delivering intrusive advertisements to the users. In essence, having UpgradeIdeas present on your Mac devices will lead to a significantly diminished user experience, the exact opposite of what the application advertises. Furthermore, UpgradeIdeas spreads itself through underhanded distribution methods such as bundling or as part of fake software installers/updaters. As such, it also is classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program).

While installed on the Mac, UpgradeIdeas will generate unwanted advertising materials. Pop-ups, banners, coupons, in-text links can all be shown by the application. Users should keep in mind that engaging with the advertisements could expose them to serious security risks. Via forced redirects, they could be taken to phishing pages harvesting all entered user information, fake giveaways trying to take money from the users or domains promoting additional PUPs.

The most troubling characteristic of most PUPs, however, is their ability to collect browsing-related information. Users risk having their browsing history, performed searches, and clicked URLs monitored and then uploaded to a remote server. Some PUPs also access device details such as geolocation, IP address, ISP, and even payment information, if such details have been saved into the affected Web browser.
