Threat Database Adware UnitNetwork

UnitNetwork

UnitNetwork is a deceptive application designed to generate monetary gains for its operators through several intrusive means. It targets Mac users and then activates its adware and browser hijacker functions. Furthermore, to ensure that users will not notice that the application is being installed on their Mac systems, UnitNetwork employs various questionable techniques in its distribution. Typically, PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) such as this one are hidden inside the installation setting of another legitimate software product or injected into fake installers and updaters.

However, after being deployed, UnitNetwork will make its presence known almost immediately. The PUP will start generating numerous intrusive advertisements that could affect the browsing experience on the Mac significantly. The advertisements themselves may take the form of pop-ups, banners, in-text links, etc. They could even be put into unrelated websites. Users who engage with advertisements delivered by such dubious sources risk being redirected to scam websites, phishing pages, suspicious online gaming and betting platforms and other untrustworthy places.

At the same time, users will notice that their Web browser has started to act strangely. It will open an unfamiliar address whenever it is launched, a new tab is started, or a search is conducted via the URL bar. This is the result of UnitNetwork's browser hijacker capabilities. The application will set the affected browser settings to open a promoted address. Browser hijackers are commonly known for generating artificial traffic towards fake search engines.

Users should keep in mind that most PUPs also are capable of data-tracking. These intrusive programs could be collecting various information in the background silently. The targeted data may include the user's browsing history, search history, clicked URLs, as well as numerous device details (IP address, ISP, browser type, geolocation, etc.).
