Threat Database Adware UltraEngine

UltraEngine

UltraEngine is another dubious application that tries to take advantage of Mac users. First, it relies on questionable distribution techniques designed specifically to hide the fact that such PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) are being delivered to the user's device. Then, UltraEngine will activate its adware and browser hijacker functionalities to monetize its presence on the system and generate revenue for its operators.

The typical consequence of having adware present on your computer or device is a significant influx of unwanted and intrusive advertisements. The advertisements may appear as pop-ups, banners, in-text links, etc. Users should be careful when dealing with them or risk being redirected to suspicious websites running online tactics, phishing schemes, fake giveaways and other nefarious activities

Meanwhile, UltraEngine's browser hijacker part will assume control over the user's Web browsers. The PUP will affect the homepage, new tab page and the default search engine. All three settings will be modified to start opening the address of a sponsored website, usually a fake search engine. Fake search engines typically lack the ability to generate any results and instead cause unwanted redirects to either legitimate or dubious engines.

Another risk commonly associated with PUP is the ability of these applications to spy on the user's browsing activities. Various data, such as all visited websites, initiated searches and clicked URLs could be continuously transmitted to a server under the control of the PUP's operators. When dealing with applications, such as UltraEngine, it is strongly recommended to use a professional security solution to ensure that no traces of the application will be left behind on the Mac.
