Threat Database Mac Malware TrackFrequency

TrackFrequency

TrackFrequency is an intrusive application that is targeting Mac users. The application could try to advertise itself by claiming to have some useful or convenient features. What users will not be sufficiently warned about, is that TrackFrequency's main functionality is to deliver unwanted advertisements. Indeed, cybersecurity researchers have classified this application as being adware. Keep in mind that adware, browser hijackers, and other PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) could be spread through underhanded methods including software bundles and fake installers.

The exact behavior exhibited by TrackFrequency could be influenced by certain factors. For example, some PUPs perform certain actions only if the user's IP address, geolocation, device type, etc., all match certain prerequisites. However, in general, adware applications are tasked with running an annoying ad campaign on the devices they are installed. Users will be frequently presented with unwanted advertisements that could disrupt their work or distract them from their current activities.

More importantly, the displayed ads could be promoting untrustworthy destinations. Users may see advertisements for pages running fake giveaways, phishing schemes or other online tactics. Adware such as TrackFrequency also could promote additional PUPs by presenting them as seemingly legitimate applications.

When it comes to PUPs, users should remember that these applications are notorious for having data-tracking capabilities. While still present on the system, they could be harvesting vast amongst of data including device details, browsing and search histories, clicked URLs and more. In some cases, the PUP could even try to extract details from the browser's autofill data, such as account credentials, banking details or payment data.
