Threat Database Adware TaskSystem

TaskSystem

TaskSystem is a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) that uses underhanded tactics to invade users' Mac devices. The program can arrive on the system via software bundles, where its installation is hidden behind the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings as a preselected choice. Another popular method for the distribution of such dubious applications is through fake software installers/updaters. No matter how TaskSystem managed to install itself on the device, its presence there would be felt almost immediately.

After all, the core functionality of the threat is to generate monetary gains for its creators by delivering intrusive advertising materials to the affected users, typical adware behavior. The advertisements could take numerous different forms - pop-ups, in-text links, banners, etc. They could even start to cover up the content viewed by the user, while also exerting a toll on the system's resources that could potentially lead to slowdowns, freezes or crashes. Furthermore, while PUPs are not considered a direct threat to the systems they are installed on, engaging with the advertisements they deliver should be regarded as a potential security risk. Users may end up landing on dubious scheme pages, domains spreading additional PUPs, or even compromised websites trying to infect visitors with serious malware threats.

Adware and PUPs also are known for spying on the user's browsing habits. They access various data kinds that are then packaged and uploaded to a remote server. The operators of the application can then decide to exploit the acquired information in several different ways including selling it to third parties that may very well be cybercriminal groups.
