Threat Database Adware SoftwareHelper

SoftwareHelper

SoftwareHelper is a dubious application that is being designed to execute on Mac devices. The goal of the application's creators is to earn revenue via intrusive and questionable means. Indeed, SoftwareHelper has been observed to act as both adware and a browser hijacker. As a result, users that have allowed the app to invade their system will be subjected to a noticeable increase in the unwanted advertisements encountered while browsing, as well as unauthorized redirects to dubious sites.

Advertisements generated by adware applications could appear as pop-ups, banners, surveys, etc. To entice users into clicking on them, the adveertisemnts may exploit various social engineering or clickbait tactics. Furthermore, the advertisements could lead to hoax websites, phishing pages, or platforms spreading intrusive PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

At the same time, SoftwareHelper will establish control over the user's Web browser and modify several important settings, such as the homepage, new tab page, or the default search engine. The affected settings will now be overwritten with a promoted address, usually, one belonging to a fake search engine. Fake engines do not generate results on their own.

While present on the device, the PUP also may silently spy on the user's browsing activities. These applications are known for targeting browsing-related information, as well as numerous device details. In some cases, even sensitive information saved as autofill data in the browser could be extracted and transmitted to the PUP's operators.
