Threat Database Adware SmartSearchQuest

SmartSearchQuest

SmartSearchQuest is a dubious application that is designed with a singular purpose - to monetize its presence on users' Mac systems via questionable and intrusive means. The application combines the capabilities of adware and browser hijackers. Due to the misleading distribution methods it employs, SmartSearchQuest also is classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). Other examples of such disruptive applications include AssistiveMode, CheckLetter and MinePass.

With SmartSearchQuest present on their Macs, users will be subjected to a constant influx of annoying advertisements. The advertisements could take various forms and may even be injected into unrelated websites, severely diminishing the user experience on the device. Users should avoid engaging with the generated advertisements or risk being redirected to shady and unsafe pages.

As we said, SmartSearchQuest also is a browser hijacker. It will establish control over the user's Web browser and force it to open a promoted address. The application will target the homepage, new app page, and the default search engine settings in particular. Browser hijackers typically generate artificial traffic towards a fake search engine.

Strictly speaking, PUPs such as SmartSearchQuest are not considered malware and do not pose a direct threat. However, having a PUP installed on your computer or device is not without risks completely. These dubious applications are known for possessing data-tracking capabilities. The collected information could include all browsing activities, numerous device details, and in the most threatening cases, even payment details and credit/debit card numbers.
