Threat Database Adware SmartResultsNavigation

SmartResultsNavigation

SmartResultsNavigation is a dubious program designed to affect Mac users specifically. The application doesn't wait for users to download and install it willingly, as the chances of that happening are extremely low. Instead, it spreads via underhanded methods that mask its installation from the user's attention. SmartResultsNavigation has been observed to hide inside fake Adobe Flash Player installers. This deceptive behavior classifies the application as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program).

Once inside the user's Mac, SmartResultsNavigation will activate both its adware and browser hijacker functionalities. The adware part is responsible for delivering intrusive pop-ups, banners, in-text links, surveys and other advertising materials to the device. The advertisements could lead to unsafe destinations, such as phishing pages and online tactics.

The browser hijacker side of SmartResultsNavigation will take control over the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine settings of the user's Web browsers. The goal is to then generate as much artificial traffic as possible towards a sponsored address. It should be noted that browser hijackers are typically employed in the promotion of fake search engines and SmartResultsNavigаtion is not an exception. Fake engines cannot produce results on their own and either redirect to the legitimate ones such as Yahoo, Bing, and Google, or to dubious engines that deliver questionable results filled with third-party ad links.

However, PUPs have another shady aspect that must be taken into account - they are almost always capable of harvesting data. Typically, the targeted information includes the browsing activities of the user, as well as device details such as IP address, geolocation, ISP and more. All collected information could then be transmitted to a remote server under the control of the PUP's operators.
