Issue Skype Webcam Not Working

Skype Webcam Not Working

Skype has remained among the top VoIP platforms despite launching way back in 2003. The application caught the attention of Microsoft and the technical giant purchased it in 2011. Since then Skype is one of the core applications on Windows systems. However, one issue that users sometimes have to deal with is their webcam not working with Skype. The causes for the problem could vary so users may need to try several different solutions until they find the right one. Explore the potential fixes outlined below and see if they are able to help.

Use the latest Skype version

Updates often include numerous fixes for bugs and glitches. That is why is a good first step to check if a new Skype version has been released.

  1. Open Skype, click on the ellipsis located in the left pane, and choose 'Settings.'
  2. Select 'Help & Feedback' from the left pane.
  3. Wait for Skype to automatically check for available updates and then install them. If you are already using the latest version, you'll see the following message - 'You're on the latest version of Skype.'

Check if the webcam is configured correctly

  1. Open Skype, click on the ellipsis located in the left pane, and choose 'Settings.'
  2. This time go to the 'Audio & Video' tab.
  3. If you are presented with a message stating 'No device found. Learn more about fixing this issue,' then Skype cannot detect the webcam at all. If your camera comes with dedicated software make sure that it is enabled there. If there is a physical On/Off switch, make sure it is turned on.
  4. If, instead, you have multiple webcams connected to the system, make sure that the right one is selected in Skype via the Video dropdown menu.

Check the Privacy settings

  1. Right-click the Start menu icon and select 'Settings.'
  2. Open 'Privacy.'
  3. From the left pane, select 'Camera.'
  4. Check if the toggle for the 'Allow apps to access your camera' is set to on.
  5. Take a look at the apps allowed to access the webcam and make sure that Skype is set to on.
