Threat Database Adware SearchMultiplyResults

SearchMultiplyResults

SearchMultiplyResults is yet another PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) that doesn't wait for Mac users to find and download it through legitimate means. Instead, it spreads itself via questionable or misleading tactics, such as bundling or fake software installers. For example, infosec experts have observed SearchMultiplyResults being injected into fake installers for the Adobe Flash Player.

Once deployed onto the Mac, SearchMultiplyResults will begin to monetize its presence by running an intrusive ad campaign, as well as promoting a dubious website by taking over the user's Web browser. Advertisements by suspicious sources, such as SearchMultiplyResults, cannot be trusted. Indeed, by interacting with them, users risk being taken to deceiving websites, phishing pages, shady online game platforms and others.

Simultaneously, the PUP will change the browser's homepage, new tab page and the default search engine. All affected settings will now be set to open the promoted address. While the application is installed on the system, users may be unable to restore their Web browser to their normal states. Typically, the promoted address belongs to a fake search engine. Users will notice that the fake engine cannot generate results on its own quickly. Instead, the search queries will be redirected through Yahoo, Bing or Chrome.

PUPs also are notorious for possessing data harvesting functionalities. The applications may be spying on the user's browsing activities silently and transmitting the acquired data to a remote server under the control of their operators.
