Threat Database Browser Hijackers Search.dramofog.com

Search.dramofog.com

Search.dramofog.com (can also be encountered as searchv.dramofog.com) is the address of a fake search engine that is being promoted through illegitimate means. Many dubious browsers present themselves as legitimate tools that could deliver faster and more accurate searches, just for the users to discover that their real functionality doesn't come even close to what is advertised. Instead, the fake search engines display unreliable results that have various ad links injected into them.

In addition, fake engines such as search.dramofog.com do not wait for users to install and try them willingly, as that is extremely unlikely to happen. They are, instead, being proliferated through PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) and browser hijacker applications. Once inside the user's computer, these applications take over the Web browser and modify its settings. The homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine will be assigned to open the address of the fake engine, search.dramofog.com in this case. By employing various 'helper objects,' the browser hijacker can ensure that users will not be able to further modify the settings. Afterward, starting a browser, opening a new tab, or making a search via the URL field would open the search.dramofog.com engine immediately, generating artificial traffic towards it.

Typically, fake browser engines and PUPs also try to harvest user-related information from the systems they are present on. The gathered data could include device and browsing-related details such as the IP address, geolocation, search history, visited websites, clicked URLs, etc. The operators of the fake search engine could then exploit the collected information by themselves or try to sell it to interested parties that might very well include cybercriminals.
