Search.borderov.com

Search.borderov.com is one of the numerous dubious search engines that are available on the net. And exactly as most of them, it also is being promoted through a dedicated PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) called Borderov that acts as a browser hijacker. These applications are seldom downloaded by users willingly. Instead, they hide their installation process through deceptive distribution tactics such as bundling or being disguised as an installer/updated for a legitimate product.

The Borderov browser hijacker can affect all of the most popular browsers such as Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Immediately after installation, the PUP will proceed to take over the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine of the respective browser. All three settings will be modified to open or redirect to the search.borderov.com search engine. As a result, whenever the user opens the browser, starts a new tab, or conducts a search it would generate traffic towards the promoted website. The browser hijacker also acts as a safeguard for the modified settings, preventing users from changing them to their previous states.

The biggest red flag surrounding dubious search engines is that nearly all of them collect private user information that could later be shared with third-parties. Borderov is not an exception. The browsing history, search history, clicked URLs, IP address, geolocation, and more could all be tracked, logged, and exfiltrated to remote servers.
