The Safe Search by SmartTab is a browser extension that offers to help users organize their homepage and new tab page and make them easier and more useful to navigate. Indeed, the application will introduce a new search form on the homepage of the user's browsers, add relevant weather information, and include links to various popular social media, entertainment or other websites.
Users that did not expect the application to behave in such a way, could associate these changes with those caused by an intrusive browser hijacker. While such PUPs have been extremely prevalent even within the Apple ecosystem, the Safe Search by SmartTab has been found to lack any harmful functionalities. Furthermore, it must be installed manually by the users.
On the other hand, fully-fledged PUPs will cause unwanted redirects to dubious websites and fake search engines, introduce annoying and deceptive ads promoting questionable pages, or present users with offers for additional PUPs disguised as seemingly legitimate programs. PUPs also are notorious for having data-tracking functions. While present on the system, they might be continuously accessing the browsing history, search history, and each clicked URL, and transmitting the data to their operators. It also is not that rare for the PUP to harvest device details and even information that has been saved into the affected browsers. This means that users may risk having their banking or payment details exposed to third parties.
