'RunningUpdaterd Will Damage Your Computer' Message

Many users have begun encountering macOS prompts that warn them about a certain application they have installed on their systems. The message will be similar to '[application name] will damage your computer. You should move it to Trash.' The intention behind the prompt is well-meaning as many of the applications that cause the prompt to appear are classified as PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) and either adware or browser hijackers. These applications are very rarely installed intentionally by the users and more often than not they sneak themselves by employing dubious marketing strategies such as bundling or fake program updates. RunningUpdaterd is not an exception.

To make the prompt that warns about RunningUpdaterd go away, users will have to remove the underlying cause - the adware application itself. Although RunningUpdaterd is not considered a threat, it can act as a gateway that will expose users to additional security risks. After all, adware's main goal is to monetize its presence on the system by generating intrusive and unwanted advertisements. Users who click on the displayed advertisements could be redirected to phishing pages, landing pages for technical support tactics and domains propagating additional PUPs. Furthermore, the user's data could be appropriated by the installed PUPs. The data can include browsing history and conducted searches, IP address, geolocation, ISP (Internet Service Provider) and more.

The best way to deal with RunninUpdaterd and stop the annoying warning prompts is to remove the application with a legitimate anti-malware solution. Perform a scan of your system and remove all suspicious applications that you do not recognize.
