RemoteView

RemoteView is a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) affecting Mac users. In most cases, PUPs are barely functional applications whose core goals are to generate monetary gains for their creators, by running intrusive advertising campaigns or promoting dubious search engines. RemoteView can perform both as it is capable of acting as adware and a browser hijacker.

The unwanted advertisements could have a massive impact on the user experience on the device but, more importantly, they could lead to unsafe third-party websites via forced redirects. At the same time, the homepage, new page tab, and the default search engine of the user's browser will be forced to open a promoted address. Browser hijackers are typically used as vehicles for the promotion of fake search engines.

However, the biggest red flag associated with RemoteView is its data-harvesting capabilities. The PUP attempts to access sensitive information. Users risk having their passwords, phone numbers, credit card, banking details and more being exposed. The collected information will be packed and sent to a remote server. The operators of the PUP could then exploit the acquired details to run targeted attacks, breach other user accounts, or simply offer to sell the data to interested third parties (that could very well include cybercriminals).
