Reig Ransomware
The Reig Ransomware is another threatening variant that has been spawned from the infamous and rather prolific STOP/Djvu family of ransomware threats. Functionally, Reig Ransomware doesn't deviate in any meaningful way from the typical behavior of a threat from the STOP/Djvu Ransomware family. The Reig Ransomware aims to infect computers and then lock them up by deploying an encryption routine with an uncrackable cryptographic algorithm. Affected users will lose access to nearly all of their files stored on the compromised system.
When the Reig Ransomware encrypts a file, it will mark that file by appending '.reig' to the original name as a new extension. Also, a text file named '_readme.txt' will be dropped in every folder containing locked data. These files carry the ransom note of the threat with instructions for its victims.
Affected users are told that the price they will have to pay to receive the decryption tool from the hackers is $980. To prove their ability to restore the user's data, the cybercriminals allow their victims to send a single file that will be decrypted for free. Two email addresses are provided as communication channels - 'helpteam@mail.ch' and 'helpmanager@airmail.cc.' If contact is initiated within 72 hours after the ransomware infection, the hackers promise to cut the price in half to $490. It is never a good idea to enter into deals with people responsible for unleashing malware threats.
