Threat Database Adware RealChannel

RealChannel

RealChannel is an intrusive application that is equipped with both browser hijacker and adware capabilities. Once deployed on the user's Mac device, the application will take over the installed Web browsers to promote a sponsored address, while also running an annoying ad campaign. Most applications of this type also will collect various information about the user's browsing habits silently.

It is important to remember that browser hijackers, adware, and other PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) are heavily reliant on questionable distribution techniques to spread themselves. After all, few users would be willing to intentionally allow such applications on their devices. That is why PUP operators usually inject their applications in shady software bundles or fake installers/updates.

The more noticeable consequences of having RealChannel present on your Mac include a sudden change in the browser's homepage, new page tab and default search engine. These settings would now be set to open RealChannel Search, a fake search engine that redirects and shows results taken from the legitimate Yahoo engine. At the same time, RealChannel also will be responsible for a significant increase in the dubious advertisements and redirects encountered while browsing. These advertisements should be approached with caution, as they can promote or lead to hoax websites, platforms promoting additional PUPs and more.
