Threat Database Ransomware Readnet Ransomware

Readnet Ransomware

The Readnet Ransomware is a variant from the MedusaLocker malware family. Despite the threat lacking any significant improvements compared to the rest of the varian from the MedusaLocker Ransomware family, its ability to cause damage should not be underestimated. Cybercriminals can utilize the Readnet Ransomware to lock the data of corporate entities, as well as individual users and then extort the victims for money. Files, such as documents, PDFs, archives, databases, etc., stored on the breached devices will be rendered unusable via a strong encryption routine.

All files locked by the Readnet Ransomware will have the extension '.Readnet7' appended to their original names. Users should keep in mind that the specific number found in the new extension could vary. The threat also creates a new HTML file on infected systems. The file named 'HOW_TO_RECOVER_DATA.html' contains a lengthy ransom note detailing the demands of the threat actors.

According to the ransom note, the operators of the Readnet Ransomware are running a double-extortion operation. The attackers state that apart from locking the data of the chosen target, they have also exfiltrated sensitive information from the breached systems that is now stored on a server under their control. The main communication channel mentioned in the note is a dedicated Tor website, but victims also can try to reach the attackers by messaging their two email addresses at 'ithelp04@decorous.cyou' and 'ithelp04@wholeness.business.' According to the message, the size of ransom that victims will need to pay will be higher, after a period of 72 hours following the Readnet Ransomware attack.
