Threat Database Ransomware Qqmt Ransomware

Qqmt Ransomware

Analysis of the Qqmt Ransomware threat has confirmed that it is one more variant based on the infamous STOP/Djvu malware family. Cybercriminals appear to still be using this particular malware strain for the creation of new threats. After all, although the different variants have few features that set them apart from each other, they all retain the strong encryption capabilities associated with this malware family. Indeed, devices infected by the Qqmt Ransomware will be subjected to data encryption that will leave nearly all of the documents, PDFs, archives, databases, photos, and more, in an unusable and inaccessible state.

The threat will mark each processed file by adding a new extension - '.qqmt,' to its original name. Affected victims also will notice the sudden appearance of a text file named '_readme.txt' on the breached device. The file contains a ransom note detailing the instructions of the threat actors responsible for the ransomware attack.

In the note, the cybercriminals specify that the ransom they demand to be paid amounts to exactly $980. However, this initial sum could potentially be reduced by 50% if the victims of the threat establish contact with the hackers within 72 hours. As part of their message, the affected users could send a single encrypted file to be unlocked for free. Three communication channels are mentioned in the note - two email addresses ('restorealldata@firemail.cc' and 'gorentos@bitmessage.ch') and a Telegram account ('@datarestore').

Users debating whether to contact the cybercriminals should keep in mind that doing so could be extremely risky. The hackers may take the money and run away without unlocking all of the encrypted data. They may also try to take further advantage of the impacted victims leading to additional privacy or security issues.
