More and more intrusive and annoying apps focused primarily on the Apple ecosystem, and more specifically, Mac users are being released. One such app is ProjectSource. Instead, of trying to benefit its users through its features, the app is mostly concerned with generating as much revenue for its creators via various underhanded methods. Indeed, ProjectSource is equipped with the capabilities of both adware and a browser hijacker.

If allowed on the Mac, most apps of this type mask their installation by being included in dubious software bundles or fake installers, ProjectSource will start executing its actions almost immediately. Affected users will notice a marked increase in the ads encountered during browsing or while simply using the Mac.

Advertisements generated by unfamiliar or unproven sources should not be approached carelessly. Indeed, it is a common occurrence for the ads delivered by adware to promote additional shady apps and PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs), phishing pages, scam websites, etc.

Meanwhile, ProjectSource will attempt to take control over the user's web browsers. The app goes after the homepage, new tab page, and default search engine settings and changes them to now open a promoted page. Afterward, whenever the affected browser is launched, a new tab is opened, or a search is started through the URL bar, it would generate traffic towards a dubious search engine.

Users should not rely on dubious or fake search engines for their web searches. While sometimes the presented results may be taken from a reputable engine such as Yahoo, Bing, or Chrome, this is not always the case. Dubious engines may generate low-quality results that also include various sponsored ads or promote links to untrustworthy third-party websites.
