Threat Database Mac Malware ProductUpgrade

ProductUpgrade

ProductUpgrade is an adware application targeting Mac users specifically, using deceitful marketing tactics to gain entry to the user's computers. This method could include bundling - injecting the installation of the adware as a selectable option hidden several layers deep into the installation process of another more popular freeware application or pretending to be a software installer or updater.

Once established, ProductUpgrade will begin to generate monetary gains for its creators by delivering unwanted and intrusive advertisements onto the affected device. The advertisements could be displayed on the desktop or as forced browser redirects, diminishing the browsing experience on the device significantly.

Being adware means that ProductUpgrade ranks quite low on the chart of most malware types, but the application is still considered a security risk. Indeed, the advertisements served by it can take users to suspicious or outright compromised third-party websites. It is not uncommon for the final destinations to be landing pages for technical support tactics, dubious adult-oriented websites or online casinos. Users also can be subjected to offers for various PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) that when installed could be used to track their browsing habits and exfiltrate the information.

It is strongly recommended to remove adware applications like ProductUpgrade as soon as you notice the first signs of their presence.
