PlatformDeploy

PlatformDeploy is a browser hijacker extension that is used to promote a fake search engine. Users typically do not realize when such programs are being delivered to their Macs due to the various deceptive distribution tactics that are being employed. Two of the most common methods are bundling and via fake installers/updaters. The reliance on such dubious tactics justifies the classification of these applications as PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

The fake search engine promoted by PlatformDeploy is search.rktz9.com. The browser hijackers modify the homepage, new page tab, and the default search engine, ensuring that almost any action taken by the user will result in a redirect to the promoted page. As for rktz9.com, it cannot produce any search results on its own. Instead, the user's search queries will be redirected to another engine, such as the legitimate google.com and search.yahoo.com. Some fake engines, however, may redirect to a dubious page that can produce low-quality results on its own. Users should avoid clicking on any of them as they could lead to questionable places.

Keep in mind that a common trait observed in most PUP is data-harvesting. While these applications are present on your Mac, they could be tracking all visited websites, initiated searchers, opened links, as well as the device's IP address, geolocation and other details. Consider performing a scan with a professional security product as soon as you notice any signs that might be attributed to a PUP's activity.
