Threat Database Adware PlatformCache

PlatformCache

Another intrusive application has been spotted by infosec researchers. The application is named PlatformCache, is from the AdLoad famil, and its functionality revolves mostly around acting as adware. This means that the application is predominantly interested in generating monetary gains for its operator through the delivery of unwanted advertisements to the users of Mac devices. Furthermore, adware and other PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) are highly reliant on questionable tactics, such as dubious software bundles and fake installers for their distribution

The consequences of having PlatfromCache installed on the Mac would become noticeable almost immediately. The intrusive advertisements generated by the program may appear as pop-ups, banners, in-text links and more. Users should try to avoid interacting with any of the shown advertisements. After all, adware applications are known for delivering advertisements promoting suspicious or even unsafe third-party websites, as well as spreading additional annoying PUPs.

Adware applications are often equipped with data-tracking capabilities. They could try to siphon various information regarding the user's browsing habits. The PUP's operators could be continuously receiving information about the user's browsing history, search history, clicked links and more. Some unwanted applications may even try to extract sensitive information, such as payment and banking details including credit/debit card numbers.
