OperativeEngine
OperativeEngine is a browser hijacker application that is targeting Mac users. The application is propagated through deceptive means designed to hide its installation. In nearly all cases, this involves 'bundling' - packaging the intruder app inside the installation settings of a legitimate, and way more desirable software product. The reliance on such underhanded distribution techniques classifies OperativeEngine as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program).
No matter how the PUP managed to sneak itself onto the Mac its presence there, it will be felt almost immediately. Users will notice that their Web browser has started to behave rather strangely. The normal homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine could all have been affected by OperativeEngine. As a result, users will be redirected to a random address before landing on the legitimate Yahoo search engine. Unfortunately, this PUP protects itself and the changes it has made by exploiting the 'managed by your organization' and 'installed by enterprise policy' features in Chrome.
You should try to remove OperativeEngine, as well as any other PUP, as soon as you notice their presence. After all, PUPs are commonly known for possessing data-harvesting capabilities and tracking the user's browsing activities. The collected information could be packaged and transmitted to a remote server where the operators of the PUP can exploit it in a variety of ways.
