Threat Database Adware NetFunctionSearch

NetFunctionSearch

NetFunctionSearch is an intrusive application that is equipped with the capabilities of both adware and a browser hijacker. The chances of users downloading and installing such applications on their systems willingly are extremely slim. The creators of NetFuntionSearch and all other similar applications, such as AssistiveMode, MacOSDefender, and ElementSignal, are aware of this fact and that is why they instead rely on questionable distribution techniques. The most popular is known as bundling. When it comes to NetFuntionSearch specifically, the application has been spotted injected into fake installers for Adobe Flash Player. The shady behavior classifies it as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program).

Details

If NetFunctionSearch manages to infiltrate the user's Mac system, it will initiate multiple intrusive processes in an attempt to monetize its presence. First, the application will begin generating numerous unwanted advertisements. The advertisements could take different forms - banners, pop-ups, text links, and could even be injected into unrelated sites. Users should avoid engaging with the displayed advertisements or risk triggering a forced redirect to a shady third-party website.

At the same time, NetFunctionSearch will establish control over the installed Web browsers. The goal is to promote a sponsored address, typically a fake search engine. Browser hijackers usually affect the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine settings. Fake engines are classified as such, due to their inability to produce results on their own. Instead, they redirect all initiated search queries through a legitimate engine (Yahoo, Bing, Google, etc.).

Data-Collection

PUPs are known for spying on the user's browsing activities. The intrusive applications could be continuously collecting the browsing history, search history, clicked links and more. All harvested data will be transmitted to a server controlled by the specific application's operators. Users are strongly encouraged to perform a full scan with a professional security solution on the first signs of any suspicious activity on their computers or devices.
