Threat Database Ransomware Mine Ransomware

Mine Ransomware

The Mine Ransomware is a threatening variant, belonging to the notorious STOP/Djvu Ransomware family. It is a threat designed specifically to target the data of its victims and lock it using a military-grade encryption algorithm. Affected documents, PDFs, archives, databases, pictures, photos, etc., will be rendered completely unusable. The goal of the attackers is to extort money from their victims in exchange for the potential restoration of the encrypted files.

One of the characteristics that set the Mine Ransomware apart from the countless other STOP/Djvu threats is the file extensions it uses to mark the encrypted files. Indeed, victims will notice that nearly all of the files stored on the compromised device now have '.mine' appended to their original names. In addition, the threat will create a '_readme.txt' file with the intention of delivering a ransom note to the victims.

Ransom Note's Overview

Reading the ransom-demanding message of the Mine Ransomware reveals that the cybercriminals responsible for the threat want to receive a ransom of exactly $980. However, that initial sum is not set in stone and victims can potentially cut it in half to $490. According to the instructions, the reduction in the ransom will be available to users that initiate contact within the first 72 hours of the ransomware attack. Apparently, victims also can test the ability of the threat actors to restore the affected data by sending one encrypted file to be unlocked for free. The chosen file must not contain any valuable information, though.
