MemoryField

Mac users have one more dubious application to look out for. Named MemoryField, this PUP possesses the capabilities of both adware and a browser hijacker. For its distribution, MemoryField relies predominantly on deceptive methods and techniques. PUPs are known for hiding inside fake installers/updates for legitimate applications or being packaged alongside a far more desirable software product in what is known as 'bundling.'

No matter how MemoryField managed to infiltrate your Mac, its presence there will be felt almost immediately. The adware part will start running an intrusive advertising campaign that could decrease the browsing experience on the device dramatically. Furthermore, engaging with the presented advertising materials should be considered rather risky. Users may be taken to shady adult websites, pages conducting online scams, phishing schemes, etc.

MemoryField also will affect the user's Web browser. The application is capable of modifying specific browser settings - homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine, and forced them to open a promoted address. In the vast majority of cases, these browser hijacker applications are used as a method to drive artificial traffic towards fake search engines. Users should keep in mind that initiating searches via unproven engines could present them with results riddled with shady ad links.

It is strongly recommended to remove any PUPs as soon as possible. Otherwise, these intruder programs could track the browsing activities conducted in the affected browsers silently. Users may have their browsing and search histories, various device details, and even account credentials and payment info scraped, stored in a file, and then transmitted to a remote server.
