MegaUnit

MegaUnit is a dubious program that targets users' Mac systems. The goal of the application is to install itself to the system without being noticed and then monetize its presence via intrusive actions, such as running an ad campaign and taking over the user's Web browser. So, in practice, MegaUnit combines the capabilities of adware with those of a browser hijacker.

Once deployed to the system, MegaUnit will start generating intrusive ads that could start to impact the browsing experience on the device drastically. The advertisements might cover the legitimately viewed content and could take various forms - pop-ups, banners, surveys, in-text links, etc. Engaging with the presented advertising materials should be avoided, as the advertisements could lead to suspicious third-party websites running online tactics, phishing schemes, or other dubious activities.

At the same time, MegaUnit will modify the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine of the user's Web browsers. This is a common tactic when it comes to promoting dubious or fake search engines. By changing these particular settings, the browser hijacker ensures that whether the users launch the browser, open a new tab, or conduct a search via the URL tab, they would always land on the promoted address.

It should be noted that the deceptive tactics involved in MegaUnit's distribution also classify it as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program). Users should be warned that most PUPs are capable of spying on their browsing activities. These intrusive applications can fetch the entire browsing history, search history, clicked URLs, IP address of the device, geolocation, and more, and transmit the gathered information to a remote server.
