Maiv Ransomware

The Maiv Ransomware is a malware threat that is part of the STOP/Djvu Ransomware family. As another variant, Maiv may not be a unique threat or exhibit any meaningful improvements, but the impact it can have on the infected computers remains massive. The threat is capable of locking a vast number of file types including some of the most widely used, such as documents, PDFs, archives, databases and more. Victims will lose their access to the data contained in the affected files.

Following the behavioral pattern of the other STOP/Djvu variants, Maiv also modifies the names of the files it encrypts. The threat appends them with a new file extension - '.maiv.' Upon completion of the encryption process, the malware proceeds to drop a ransom note with instructions from the attackers. The message is placed on the system in a new text file named '_readme.txt.'

Ransom Note's Details

The ransom-demanding message of the Maiv Ransomware states that restoration of the locked files is only possible after paying for the decryption tool and key that the hackers possess. Victims are told that they will have to send a ransom of $980 to get their data back. Being a STOP/Djvu variant, Maiv also mentions the opportunity for the ransom amount to be decreased in half to $490.

To get the discount, users are expected to contact the attackers within 72 hours of the ransomware infection. Victims can use the two email addresses mentioned in the note - 'support@sysmail.ch' and 'helprestoremanager@airmail.cc' to message the cybercriminals. They also can attach a single encrypted file to their emails that the hackers promise to unlock and return for free.
