Threat Database Adware MainSearchBoard

MainSearchBoard

MainSearchBoard is a deceptive application that targets Mac users. MainSearchBoard aims to infiltrate their computers sneakily, and then begin to deliver unwanted and intrusive advertisements. In addition, the application also will promote a sponsored address by taking control over certain settings of the user's Web browser. Dubious applications such as MainSearchBoard are classified as PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) due to the underhanded tactics they use to spread themselves.

The advertisements delivered by MainSerachBoard could display lure messages meant to entice users into clicking on them. Doing so could be risky, though. The advertisements could redirect to unsafe places on the Internet such as phishing pages, various online tactics or domains promoting other PUPs.

Meanwhile, the browser hijacker functionality will modify the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine of the Web browser. All affected settings will be forced to open the specific address promoted by the application. Typically, browser hijackers promote fake search engines. The produced results should be approached with caution, as they may include numerous third-party ad links.

PUPs also are known for spying on the user's browsing activities. They may collect browsing data as well as device details with all gathered information being uploaded to a remote server.
