Threat Database Mac Malware MainFrameSelect

MainFrameSelect

MainFrameSelect is a dubious application that targets Mac users. Analysis of the application has revealed that its primary function is that of adware. Applications of this type are designed to generate intrusive advertisements on the user's device as a way to generate revenue for their operators. It should be pointed out that most adware applications also fall into the PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) category due to the questionable methods involved in their distribution.

Indeed, PUPs are mostly spread via tactics, such as software bundles where certain items will be preselected for installation, and users must specifically look for and then manually exclude them from being installed. Another common tactic involves using fake installers/updates. MainFrameSelect has been observed being promoted via deceptive websites that may present the application as a supposedly useful software product.

Having adware or a PUP present on your device could lead to several potential risks. Typically, the advertisements delivered by such applications promote dubious or unsafe destinations (phishing tactics, technical support schemes, fake giveaways, etc.) or try to deliver additional, invasive programs. Another common functionality includes data tracking. The installed PUP could be spying on users' browsing activities, harvesting device details, or, in some cases, even extracting account credentials or banking and payment info from browsers' autofill data.
