Threat Database Adware LogicalRecord

LogicalRecord

LogicalRecord is another dubious application that tries to take advantage of Mac users. The application is equipped with both adware and browser hijacker capabilities. It is also classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) due to the questionable distribution methods it employs. Typically, PUPs try to sneak themselves unnoticed by hiding inside fake software installers/updates or being packaged alongside more desirable applications in a technique known as bundling.

Once deployed, LogicalRecord will try to monetize its presence as soon as possible. It will start delivering numerous annoying advertisements as part of an advertising scheme. The advertisements may be displayed as pop-ups, surveys, banners, etc. To appear more legitimate, the ads could even be injected into unrelated sites visited by the user.

Simultaneously, LogicalRecord will assume control over the Web browsers on the system and force them to open a promoted page. The settings most commonly abused in this manner are the homepage, new tab page or the default search engine. By setting all three or a combination of them, the PUP ensures that the promoted address will be opened each time users start the browser, open a new tab, or initiate a search through the browser's URL bar. Users should keep in mind that in the vast majority of cases, browser hijackers are involved in the promotion of fake search engines. Fake engines cannot produce search results and instead, they redirect the user's searches through legitimate engines such as Yahoo, Bing or Google.

Keeping a PUP present on your Mac also could mean that your browsing activities are being tracked. These intrusive applications are known for spying on the users and collecting their browsing history, search history, all clicked links, IP addresses, geolocation and more. The data could then be packaged and transmitted to the operators of the specific PUP. Afterward, they can exploit the information by themselves or even try to sell it to interested third parties.
