Threat Database Ransomware Lockhyp Ransomware

Lockhyp Ransomware

The Lockhyp Ransomware aims to infect computers and then encrypt the data stored there with a combination of powerful cryptographic algorithms. This is a typical ransomware behavior that leads to the victims of the threat then being extorted for money. Although the Lockhyp Ransomware is a variant belonging to the MedusaLocker family, users shouldn't underestimate it in the slightest. After all, the data locked by the threat will be rendered inaccessible and unusable. Encrypted files are marked by having '.lockhyp' appended to their original names as a new extension. Upon completing its encryption process, the Lockhyp Ransomware will deliver its ransom note. The message is dropped in every folder containing locked data, as an html file named 'HOW_TO_RECOVER_DATA.html.'

Lockhyp Ransomware's Demands

The note doesn't mention the exact sum that the hackers want to receive or if any specific cryptocurrency must be used for the transactions. However, victims are warned that if 72 hours pass without establishing contact with the attackers, the ransom price will be increased. To further push affected users into complying with their demands, the hackers state that they have collected sensitive information from the infected devices. The data is stored on a remote private server and will be released to the public if the victims refuse to pay.

The note provides several communication channels. The main one is via a dedicated website accessible only through the Tor browser. If victims are unable to reach the site, they can instead send a message to two emails under the control of the hackers - 'diniaminius@winrof.com' and 'soterissylla@wyseil.com.' To demonstrate their ability to restore the encrypted data, the threat actors offer to decrypt up to 3 files that do not contain important data for free.

Unfortunately, users who contact the operators of any ransomware threat are exposing themselves to additional security risks willingly. Generally, it is strongly recommended to try and restore the data without involving the hackers. One possible method for doing so is to look for a suitable backup that was created before the ransomware threat had infiltrated the device. Keep in mind, that before proceed to restore the files, the system must be clean from any threat or otherwise the files will simply be encrypted once more.
