Threat Database Ransomware LockFiles Ransomware

LockFiles Ransomware

The LockFiles Ransomware threat appears to be targeting corporate entities primarily. Once the victim's internal network has been breached and the threat is fully deployed to a computer, it will engage an encryption routine that will leave most of the data on the infected device in a completely unusable state. Files such as any documents, databases, archives, PDFs, and many others will be locked and become impossible to access. According to cybersecurity researchers who analyzed the threat, the LockFiles Ransomware is a variant belonging to the MedusaLocker Ransomware family.

On the files are encrypted, the threat also will mark them by appending '.LockFiles' to their original names. A ransom note will be displayed to the victims, with the message being dropped on the desktop of the breached device as a file named 'how_to_back_files.html.' According to the lengthy instructions, the cybercriminals operate a double-extortion scheme, as they also claim to collect sensitive and confidential data from their victims. The exfiltrated information is stored on a private server and will only be deleted upon the victims paying the demanded ransom. Otherwise, the threat actors could release it to the public or attempt to sell it to any interested parties.

The note also states that after 72 hours have passed, the size of the ransom will be higher. To get in contact with the hackers, impacted organizations have to visit a dedicated website hosted on the TOR network. Alternatively, they could try to message the 'uncrypt2022@outlook.com' email address, which is also mentioned in the ransom note.
