LinkSet

LinkSet is another dubious application that aims to generate monetary gains for its operators through several intrusive methods. Indeed, the application aims to install itself onto users' Mac systems unnoticed and then activate its adware and browser hijacker capabilities. The reliance on questionable distribution tactics, such as bundling or fake software installers also classifies LinkSet as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program).

Adware applications are tasked with the delivery of countless unwanted and potentially risky advertisements on the systems they are present on. The advertisements may take various forms - pop-ups, banners, surveys, in-text links, etc., and could even be injected into unrelated third-party websites. The advertisements themselves may employ clickbait messages to lure users and then redirect them to suspicious and potentially unsafe pages.

At the same time, LinkSet will assume control over the user's Web browsers. More specifically, the PUP will target the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine. All three settings will be set to now open a promoted address, usually one belonging to a fake search engine. Fake engines cannot produce results as they lack such functionality completely. They either redirect the user's searches to a legitimate engine or cause redirect chains that may pass through several dubious engines. In the second case, users will be shown inaccurate and low-quality results filled with sponsored advertisements.

In addition, PUPs also are known for having data-tracking capabilities. The intruder applications could be spying on the user's activities and collecting each clicked link, opened websites, and initiated searches. The PUP also may transmit various device details to its operators.
