LanRan-2 Ransomware

By GoldSparrow in Ransomware

The LanRan-2 Ransomware is a generic encryption Trojan that is based on an earlier crypto-threat with the same name — LanRan Ransomware. The new variant has the creative name LanRan-2 Ransomware to reflect the major changes in the encryption routine recorded by researchers. The LanRan-2 Ransomware was reported to land on machines via spam emails that include a macro-enabled document.

A Microsoft Word document can be used to retrieve the Trojan from a remote host and install it on the local system. The LanRan-2 Ransomware is known to run as 'KryptoTrojaner.bin.exe' and load embedded resources called 'anRan.exe' and 'unsom.exe.' The LanRan-2 Ransomware encodes targeted images, text, presentations, spreadsheets, audio, video and databases. It drops ransom notes called '@___README___@.txt,' and 'INSTRUCTIONS.html' to the desktop and marks the encoded files with the '.LanRan2.0.5!' extension. For example, 'Sabaton-Ghost Division.mp3' is renamed to'Sabaton-Ghost Division.mp3.LanRan2.0.5!' The ransom alert is loaded in Notepad and reads:

'L_A_N_R_A_N R_A_N_S_O_M_W_A_R_E
###########################
Attention! Attention! Attention! Your Files has been encrypted By L_A_N_R_A_N__R_A_M_S_0_M_W_A_R_E

What is encryption?
Encryption is a reversible modification of information for security reasons but providing full access to it for authorized users. To become an authorized user and keep the modification absolutely reversible (in other words to have a possibility to decrypt your files) you should have an individual private key.
###########################
But not only it
It is required also to have the special decryption software (in your L_A_N_R_A_N Decryptor software) for safe and complete decryption of all your files and data.

Also, the cyber threat makes changes to the default desktop background and loads a black image with a text colored in red on top that says:

'Attention! Attention! Your Files has been encrypted By L_A_N_R_A_N____R_A_N_S_0_M_W_A_R_E

LanRan-2 Ransomware shares many similarities with HiddenTear variants like the R3store Ransomware and the RabboLock Ransomware, but unlike those, it does not save the decryption key or send it to the threat authors. It is impossible to decode the affected data even for the people who wrote the threat. You should not transfer 0.5 Bitcoin (≈3,737 USD/3,206 EUR) to the wallet of the cybercriminals. Avoid contact with 'lanran-decrypter@list.ru' and use a credible anti-malware suite to remove all traces of the LanRan-2 Ransomware safely. Backup images and services like OneDrive can help you rebuild your data using older versions of your files. AV engines mark the related files using the following detection names:
