KOK08 Ransomware

The KOK08 Ransomware can be used in ransomware attacks aimed at locking the data of the targeted victims. The KOK08 Ransomware is part of the Matrix malware family. It can affect a large set of file types and render them completely unusable. It also will change the original names of the locked files entirely. The new names will consist of an email address - 'KOK08@QQ.COM' followed by a string of random characters. Finally, '.KOK08' will be appended as a new extension.

The malware also creates a file named '!README_KOK08!.rtf' on the infected systems. Executing the file displays a lengthy ransom note detailing the instructions of the attackers. According to the message, the victim's files have been locked by using a combination of the AES-128 and RSA-2048 cryptographic algorithms. The message states that the attackers are going to keep the decryption keys required for the restoration of the data for only 7 days. After that period the keys will supposedly be deleted, rendering all of the locked files unsalvageable.

The operators of the KOK08 Ransomware provide 3 email addresses that can be used as communication channels. Victims are expected to message all 3 of them. In addition, 3 encrypted files can be attached to the messages and will apparently be decrypted for free. Alternatively, affected users can try to reach the cybercriminals via Bitmessage.
