KeyData

KeyData is another dubious application that aims to sneak itself onto users' Mac systems and then activate its intrusive functionalities. The KeyData application, in particular, is equipped with both adware and browser hijacker capabilities. It also is classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) due to the questionable tactics involved in its distribution. Applications of this type are typically spread via what is known as 'bundling' - the intruder application's installation is packaged as a preselected choice inside the installation settings of another more popular program.

Once deployed on the Mac system, KeyData will begin to monetize its presence by delivering intrusive advertisements. The advertising materials could be injected into legitimate websites and might impact the browsing experience on the device drastically. Furthermore, engaging with the presented advertisements could trigger forced redirects leading to suspicious websites (phishing or hoax pages, domains spreading PUPs, and more). At the same time, KeyData will establish control over the user's Web browser. The application is most likely going to modify the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine settings and set them to open a sponsored address.

PUPs also are generally known to spy on the user's browsing activities with the collected data being transmitted to a remote server continuously. The gathered information may include the entire browsing history, clicked URLs, conducted searches, the device's IP address, geolocation and more.
