Infosec researchers have detected another STOP/Djvu variant that has been released in the wild. Named the iisa Ransomware, the threat retains all of the threatening capabilities of this malware family, despite being a simple variant without any significant modifications or improvements. Victims of the iisa Ransomware will lose access to the majority of their data stored on the infected computers.
Indeed, the iisa Ransomware will initiate an encryption process with an uncrackable algorithm that will render the victim's documents, PDFs, archives, databases, photos, videos, images, etc. unusable. All locked files will be marked by having '.iisa' appended to their names as a new extension. Finally, the threat will drop a ransom-demanding message with instructions for the affected users.
According to the ransom note, the iisa Ransomware's operators demand to be paid exactly $980 if they are to help the victims get their files back. In exchange for getting the money, the hackers promise to send the necessary decryption key and accompanying software tool. The ransom message also mentions the typical STOP/Djvu offer to reduce the amount of the ransom by 50%. Apparently, all that the victims have to do is to send a message to the attackers within the first 72 hours of the malware infection.
Affected users also are allowed to send a single file to be decrypted for free. The only requirement is for the file not to contain any important information. To get more details, users are expected to contact the two email addresses mentioned in the ransom note - 'email@example.com' and 'firstname.lastname@example.org.'
Although losing access to your data may be extremely stressful, it is not recommended to pay any money to cybercriminals. Even contacting them could mean that users are exposing themselves to additional security risks. Other ransomware threats that have been recently detected in the wild include Crypt2022+, PencilCry, HELPME and more.
