Ib-search.com

Ib-search.com is the address of a dubious search engine. Like most services of this type, it doesn't wait for users to discover it. Instead, it is being proliferated via a browser hijacker application that is targeting Mac users predominantly. This PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) could be packaged alongside a legitimate software product. However, users may not even notice the intrusion, as the installation of the additional application will be hidden under the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings.

Once inside the user's Mac, the PUP will activate its functionality immediately, resulting in a total takeover of the web browser. Settings such as the homepage, new tab page, and the default search engine will be changed to pen the promoted address - ib-search.com. Subsequently, almost any action related to the browser will result in a redirect to the promoted search engine. Users should avoid using unproven search engines, as the result they deliver, in nearly all cases, are either entirely unusable or riddled with sponsored ad links.

Getting your browser back to normal could be difficult. Some browser hijackers establish persistence mechanisms via LaunchAgents and daemons. As a result, the PUP will be executed on every system boot, and it will undo any changes to the browser's settings introduced by the users.

Keep in mind that a common functionality observed in PUPs is data-harvesting. The applications try to access information related to the user's browsing habits, such as the search history, all opened websites and clicked URLs. The gathered information will then be packaged and uploaded to a remote server under the control of the PUP's operators.
