HotComplete

Cybersecurity researchers have identified another intrusive application that is targeting Mac users. Named HotComplete, the questionable application tries to get deployed onto users' Macs and then deliver unwanted and annoying advertisements to them, a behavior typical for an adware application. It also should be pointed out that most adware applications do not rely on the typical channels for their distribution. Instead, they employ tactics, such as software bundles or even fake installers/updates.

When HotComplete is installed on the device, it may significantly impact the user experience. Indeed, the advertisements it generates could have a disruptive and intrusive effect. However, more importantly, users should use caution when dealing with said advertisements. The advertisements are likely to be promoting untrustworthy destinations, including hoax websites, phishing schemes, fake giveaways, shady online betting platforms and more. Users also may encounter enticing advertisements for PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs), masquerading as legitimate applications.

Adware and PUPs in general, also are known for being equipped with data-tracking functions. While present on the system, these applications could be tracking the users' browsing activities (browsing history, search history, clicked URLs) and transmitting them to a remote server. The PUP's operators also may receive numerous device details, and in some cases, even sensitive information extracted from the browser's autofill data, such as account credentials, banking details, credit/debit card numbers, etc.
