GOGO Ransomware
The GOGO Ransomware is a threatening program capable of encrypting a wide range of different file types. Each locked file will have a unique ID, the cyber criminals' email address ('gotocompute@tutanota.com'), and a '.GOGO' extension added to its name. For instance, the original file name of '1.jpg' would be changed to '1.jpg.(CW-IB5967382104)(gotocompute@tutanota.com).GOGO' after encryption. After examining the underlying code and behavior of the threat, infosec researchers confirmed that it is a variant from the VoidCrypt malware family.
Once the GOGO Ransomware has finished its encryption process, it drops a ransom-demanding message titled 'unlock-info.txt' onto the victim's desktop. This message contains instructions on how to pay the ransom to regain access to their encrypted files. Unfortunately, paying the ransom does not guarantee that victims will get their data back, as the cybercriminals may not honor their promise of providing a decryption key even after getting their victims' money.
GOGO Ransomware's Ransom Note
The GOGO Ransomware demands a ransom payment in Bitcoins from its victims. In exchange, the threat actors are supposed to provide the impacted user with the necessary decryption tools that could restore the affected files. Victims are instructed to contact the cybercriminals and pay a certain ransom. The amount of the payment is said to depend on how quickly victims contact the attackers. According to the ransom note, the threat actors offer a free test decryption of one file as long as it meets certain specifications. However, it is strongly advised against paying the ransom, as this would only support criminal activity and may not result in any successful data recovery.
Protect Your Computer from Threats Like the GOGO Ransomware
One of the most crucial methods to protect against ransomware is by installing professional anti-malware software on your device. This will keep any threatening programs or code from infiltrating the device and impacting the data stored on it. Make sure the security solution you choose includes a robust collection of features and capabilities. Another equally crucial step is creating regular backups of any important data – ideally at least once per week – so that if your information does get encrypted, you have a copy stored somewhere else that remains unaffected by the attack. You could use an external hard drive, cloud storage solutions or physical storage options.
